Placement Day 4

Wednesday 20th February 2019

10.00am - 5.00 pm

In the window display, Charlotte included some of her handmade stepping stones and some gravel. This display was not placed there just to invite the audience in but also to create a dialogue with the rest of the show. This process was quite calming and the sound of the gravel being moved around into place, made me think about my childhood and the playground at school. It was such a relaxing sound and it complimented with the hard, smooth and cold texture of the individual stones. We also added bits of clay which were disperse in the gravel, to replicate her journey of finding these pieces.

A wall paper of stones was also placed by the window which mirrored the gravel laid on the bottom.

In my absence Glen and Charlotte created a neat pathway with gravel that weaved through the bollards. Starting from the window, all the way to the projection wall. It created a sense of journey of the eye but also of the body moving through the space. It is almost as though Charlotte created her own environment within this gallery space, bringing the outside world inside.

Charlotte and I added more Pieces of pottery in the gravel path, attempting to make it look unintentional.

Securing the bollards on the floor
As Glen was screwing reinforcements on the floor.. I did not know how piercing and loud the drill could be!! Would consider earplugs just incase next time!

We masked the screen where the projector will be displayed, using masking tape.

Glen Stoker - instructing
As I had a cross level lecture later on that afternoon, I asked Glen if i could attend the floor plan. We went to the office where Glen explained that exhibitions at Airspace do not have information on the wall about each piece. However they do include some information of the overall show on the leaflet the map comes on. This is to allow the audience to experience the exhibition and have their own interpretations/assumptions. They also have a choice wether they would like to read it before or after viewing the work. To make the navigation through the space easier, Glen designs a diagram on Illustrator (computer). The leaflet includes the background of the work and a quote from the artist. An artist that is interested in exhibiting at Airspace, contacts the gallery 12 months before. The conversation of the potential exhibition will give some knowledge to the management, which would lead to plan the next step.

Today was a quiet day for me and more about listening. This was because I wanted to get a sense of what the discussions of the written part of the exhibition entailed. At the time I did not have any questions as everything was very easy to understand or/and explained before hand.

Before I left, I asked Charlotte if i could make a video of her opening night, she loved the idea and asked me to send it to her once it was done. For my last placement day I was assigned the job of taking pictures of the public interacting within the space.
